Materials: 1925 Steinway A action with severe verdigris in wippen flanges. Goose = Juice (TM) provided by Joe Goss of Mother Goose Tools, and Protek (TM) = for comparison. Method: Eight flanges were measured prior to treatment with a Neuses 10g = resistance gauge. All flanges exhibited characteristic green color = around center pins. Five (1 - 5) were treated with Goose Juice (TM), = and three (6 - 8) were treated with Protek (TM). Lubricants were = applied to inside and outside of each side of the flange and the flanges = were then rotated back and forth 20 times each . Flanges were left to = sit for 30 minutes and measured again. Flanges were then allowed to sit = for 24 hours and measured once again. Flanges were measured again = after 48 hours. =20 Results: Flanges 1-5 (Goose Juice (TM)) # Before treatment 30 minutes 24 hours 48 = hours 1 10+ 6 = 4 4 2 10+ 8 = 6 5=20 3 10 5 = 4 4 4 9 4 = 3 3 5 7 6 = 4 4 Flanges 6-8 (Protek( TM)) 6 10 6 = 7 9 7 9 5 = 7 9 8 10 7 = 7 8 Note: Maximum gauge reading was 10g. Any reading exceeding the maximum = was registered above as 10+. Conclusion and comments: Goose Juice (TM) was effective in reducing the effects of verdigris = significantly more than Protek (TM) on these samples. Moreover, Goose = Juice (TM) demonstrated a more lasting effect. At this writing, it has = been about 72 hours since the treatment was initiated. Flanges 1 - 5 = are still holding at the 48 hour reading. Flanges 6 and 7 have remained = at the 48 hour reading. Flange # 8 has increased to 9g. =20 Long term results are not conclusive from this experiment. Readings = should be taken again after 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. =20 Note on application. Goose Juice (TM) is a more viscous solution than = Protek (TM) and thus it is not clear to what extent it penetrates all = the way through the bushing. Whereas it is easily observable how Protek = (TM) is easily absorbed by the bushing and surrounding wood, Goose = Juice (TM) appears to sit on the surface for much longer and doesn't = penetrate quite so readily. Nevertheless, it does appear effective in = its treatment and it can be assumed that absorption does take place. It = would be interesting to see whether modifying the composition of the = solution so that it contained either a penetrating carrier, or a higher = percentage of penetrating carrier, would effect the results. =20 Based on these results, it appears that Goose Juice (TM) is at least an = effective temporary treatment for verdigris, and possibly an effective = long term solution. An attempt to duplicate this data should be made. =20 David Love ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
