Sorry, mayber it's the language thing, but I don't know what "swedge" means.
Could you please explain how this is done for a native french Canadian.

Clyde,
Cut the piece of rod that you will use longer than you will need. Too long
is much better! Do not bend but swedge the end that will go into the lift
rod so that it will wedge in solidly. Drive it in place and next bend the
hanger and cut off the excess from both ends if there is any.
