Let off

Let-off on a vertical piano is 1/8" or greater. You will get blocking
with anything less than that.

1/6" is only for grands.

Let-off tapering is a function of the string excursion when struck. Too
close and the hammer and string contact each other multiple times. They
do anyway but too close causes loss of tone and blocking.
