Well, I thought of this but when I laid the old pinblock in position, the holes at each end not only do not go all the way through the block but their positions don't even come close to the holes in the rim. I am pretty systematic on disassembly, placing each screw in a styrofoam board in a pattern representing their position on the piano. There are no extra screws. My contention is that there was nothing screwed into the mystery holes when I took it apart. But why are they there? Why...... its a mystery! Actually, the holes may represnt a mistake by the manufacturer. After all, they did put a nose bolt in the wrong place. When I pulled the plate I could see where they had crudely enlarged the hole in the soundboard, plugged the hole in the beam with a dowel and moved the nose bolt about an inch so it would match the plate. Wooops!
