According to Wolfenden its also THE wood for hammer shanks and I've
seen it used on a few old German uprights, though most of them used
maple or even birch, as well as another very nice wood that I've
never identified.

Over here good (knocking) hammers often have hickory hafts, but thats
the only time you ever see it.

I've used maple and beech for go-bars, but ash, though good enough
for hammer hafts and scythes and things, will not recover fully from
bending. Ramin seems to be OK.
