water based finishing

I have read the postings on water based finishes with interest.  Years ago
when I last investigated them there was no reason to switch over.  After
these years of R&D time, now I am considering them again.  I know the
problem with Polyurethane Varnishes is they are so airtight they rot the
wood underneath with gray streaks showing after 5-10 years  Is this a
problem with the water based.  Everything else noted in this venue seems to
be a plus for the water based products.
