You need a "uudecode" utility.  Here's one for the Mac:

There are many advantages to getting individual messages over the digest.
Not only do you see embedded graphics and rich text instead of HTML, but
also you can sort the messages by thread, let them pile up for a day or so,
and then read just one topic at a time instead of skipping around.

It would be nice to have the archives in a similar format.
