If you don't want to strip the piano to bare wood, I recommend wet-and-dry sanding with mineral spirits and silicone carbide sandpaper to remove unneveness, then putty dents with epoxy putty, sand again and topcoat lacquer. You may have to use a black sandable primer, first, for adhesion. Just a suggestion. But it probably depends on what the original finish is. Might be shellac with carbon it it. Dunno. Drip a little wood alcohol on it to find out.
