Hi Sarah, There is a Scientific American issue based on her work. She took the violin as the "perfect" size and rescaled the viola, cello and bass on those ratios. Carleen Maley Hutchins was her name. http://www.catgutacoustical.org/people/cmh/ At 08:30 PM 4/29/2003 -0400, you wrote: An acoustic engineer whose name I forget took it upon herself to redesign string instruments in the 1940's (?). She did this by analyzing the vibrational patterns of the various elements, the acoustics of the air cavities, etc. She came up with a system of probably 6 or 8 new instruments to replace the violin, viola, cello, and bass. These instruments were purportedly superior to the existing ones and were received with considerable curiosity.> Regards, Don Rose, B.Mus., A.M.U.S., A.MUS., R.P.T. mailto:pianotuna@accesscomm.ca http://us.geocities.com/drpt1948/ 3004 Grant Rd.
