Fact is I can see little reason why it has not been tried seriously yet. On the one hand you have companies like Steinway, who if first should make an inovation, would benifit from something really big ... like a successfull shift in soundboard materials. On the other hand, you have companies like Yamaha and Kawaii who have seemingly made a point out of comming up with untraditional ways of making traditional (so to speak) instruments. Thirdly you have a host of "B-team" manufacturers left, many of them making decent enough pianos and with all kinds of reasons to land a big fish like this . And on the fourth hand, you have all these wanabees, freelance, small shops, etc. etc. etc. some of them really quite talented actually... often with more resources available to them then they are themselves clear over... nearly always convinced (for better and/or worse) that they can do things better then the present industry trend setters, just itching to make that bigtime breakthrough and change the world as it were. You'd think, in all that and the rest of the mesh that makes up our industry... that somebody out there who actually is making pianos one way or the other would have at least tried.
