Hide Glue used in piano construction

Calin asked: "What kind of glue is the "hide glue" used in piano
construction (gluing
soundboards, ribs etc.)? I have seen here 3 kinds for sale, one is called
"bone glue" - comes in small transparent brownish pellets, the second "fish
glue" - comes in transparent yellowish sheets; the third is called "rabbit
glue" - opaque brown small pieces, like shredded spaghetti.
So which one of these is what you use?

 Calin,
NONE of the above! There are many kinds of "Hide" glue. The best is that
which is made from rendered HIDES. Bone glue has it's place, but seldom. The
best I have found is 3X Chrome from a US company. I buy it in 50 lb. barrels
and sell it to techs who really care and are not satisfied with the
miscellaneous stuff from the various suppliers. The problem, as I see it, is
that most suppliers buy what they percieve to be the cheapest that will do
the trick. Most have too many fat solids in them. Don't get me wrong, fat
solids are good if used properly. I have a special mix that I make up, that
has quite a bit of fat content in it. I use this for hammers. The reason is
that it does not get quite as brittle as the 3X chrome. The down side is
that you have to "cook" it for 2 days before you can use it. The 3X Chrome
can be soaked for a minimum of one hour and then heated to use in about
another hour. It is excellent for all other action work. If you are doing
veneering, your on your own there. I haven't had to do enough of that work
to be able to speak to that question.
