What is lye

Hi Isaac:

Lye is "sodium hydroxide", NaOH, and is also called "caustic soda". You're
right that it is used in the production of soap. It's a very corrosive
alkaline base and is used to clear clogged drains as it dissolves hair. My
grandfather told me that it was originally used to remove the hair from
hides and can be made by mixing wood ash with water. I have also read that
beer breweries use it to disinfect their tanks, so it must be a
bacteriocidal poison as well.

Hope this helps.
