What is lye

Oh, god!!! I looked up lutefisk through a google search. So if I
understand correctly, this is basically a swollen, gray glob of hydrolized
protein that was once a fish about 1/5 the size. Do I have that right?

Please tell me that the glob is neutralized with hydrochloric acid prior to
consumption!

Or perhaps it is meant to be its own antacid. Actually a very elegant
solution! ;-)

Peace,
Sarah,
who likes other strange fish dishes like ceviche, blackened catfish, and eel
