Too efficient dampers?

Hello all.

Just for fun, here is a picture of an older Bechstein damper (1870).
Those dampers are very small, and installed in a way that their action
is very progressive. Only flat felt : no V shaped felt on bichords, no
W shaped felt on trichords : this grants that there is no ennoying
sound when you depress the pedal. Above this, I saw some of those
regulated so the few first bass strings dampers lift a trifle earlier
than the rest of the dampers. All this contributes to let the (aware)
pianist control a whole world of exciting shades in colour, warmth,
space, etc. though here again, the limit between sublime and ridiculous
is a red line. (But it always is, isn't it ?)

Stéphane Collin.
