Evaluated a 1925 Kingsbury (Cable) grand, about 5=924=94, for people
considering it=92s purchase. Nice condition, plenty of pinblock life, =
zero
cracks in bridges, one closed crack in soundboard, action has =93real=94
knuckles (not Brambauch style). Needs regulation badly and hadn=92t been
tuned in 15 years. Someone did a strange-looking job filing hammers but
they are serviceable for awhile=97the piano is going to be for kids to
learn on, no one in the home currently plays. Mahogany wood and veneer
in very nice condition, probably was stripped and oiled years ago as the
inner rim is typical near-black wrinkly old varnish/lacquer. Keys
(pyralin?) not chipped, sharps real wood. Strings decent. Agraffes in
bass and tenor sections. Bass surprisingly powerful and =93toneful=94 =
(new
word, means =93unthunky=94), Dampers soft and working well. $600. =
=93Take it,=94
says I.

Most unusual timbering: No straight braces or cross beams, just a deeply
bow shaped or semicircular laminated beam about 2=94 thick from middle =
of
one side to the middle of the other side with a two metal rods across,
each originating from the center of one side and connected by a
turnbuckle, ala M&H =93Tension Resonator.=94 Soundboard is from rim to =
rim
all around, no cutoffs and no part touching anything except the inner
rim and ribs, of course.

Anybody seen these pianos? Comments on old Cable grands? I know Cables
were a fairly utilitarian, if not ubiquitous, brand and never high end,
but this is a nice little piano.

Marketing: This evaluation call and the upcoming regulations, repairs,
caster cup sales, Dampp-Chaser sale, tunings, and referrals all came
because they were looking for a piano and had gotten a copy of Larry
Fine=92s =93The Piano Book=94 at the library. Guess who had donated this =
older
copy of Fine and had a =93Donated By=94 name plate in the book!=20
=20
Yes, it was I,
