Hi Clyde, The experiences I've had with the compensators were ones where I had the action out of the piano and on the bench. The one I specifically remember working with would NOT allow me to remove a wippen no matter how I twisted and turned it. And since I had several wippens to repair, I ended up removing the compensator from the action. As I recall, it wasn't that difficult. It was four or so "L" shaped "legs" that connected to the action brackets upon which the thing hinged with all the legs going through a little bushed hole in the same direction except one, and a fifth "L" shaped leg that was turned the other way. I could be wrong about the number of legs... it's been 3 or 4 years since I saw one of these. (I know I'm doing a terrible job of describing it, but if you saw it, you'd understand.) Depending upon how much you have to do, removing it can be an option. Just thought I'd chime in. Take care, Clyde.
