another response for ric M- answer to temperament test question: Why not ask if they can tell which piano has the "different temperament"? Which begs the question, "Should students be able to evaluate how close the tuning comes to ET? Actually they should first be taught what is considered "clean" unisons and octaves..... How many undergrad piano major can even do this? ---rm <snip> We're attempting to make this kinda "blind". The hope is to see if there is a preference, without being directed to focus on the tuning. And as to whether pianists notice out-of-tune instruments, it's a sad truth that many have trained themselves NOT to hear, because of the state of the instruments they practice on.....
