Shank Extractions

29 years ago, I came up with a way of extracting the broken shanks of a
vandalized Baldwin/Hamilton. Drill a 3/32" hole down the center of the
"stub". Put a few drops of "Wall Paper Remover" in the hole. Let soak for at
least 15 minutes. Put 1 1/2", #8 sheet metal screw into the hole. (Bill
Spurlock likes to use sheet rock screws) Put your hammer extractor on the
screw head/butt or hammer. Put a bit of tension on it. Heat the screw with a
heat gun or miniature torch. Extract. Voila' Final thing, is to carefully
ream the hole with the appropriate sized drill bit/combination handle set
up. Let dry another 15 minutes and assemble new shank/butt/hammer.
Hope this helps.<G>
