Downbearing and Tone

I understand your question about newer or older board, and of what design, but what difference would new, thicker bridge cap make? Or did you just bring that up as an avenue to attain too much downbearing on an older board?

You would have to clue us in on a bunch of other factors.
What type of board? Old compression crowned board with a new, thicker bridge cap? Or a new board?
