The cutoff bar is the structural member to which the edge of the soundboard
is glued. The ribs are set into notches in the cutoff bar just as they are
set into notches in the inner rim or the belly rail. The ribs do not extend
through to the other side of the cutoff bar--at least not as soundboard
ribs. There may well be spruce strips extending from the cutoff bar to the
inner rim but they are not soundboard ribs in any acoustical sense. They
are just there to keep the wood filler from cracking and/or buckling.
