Thanks for explaining that Del- I see that it's a compromise and that 
the tails are affected too.  Somehow it has never been so much of a 
problem playing on the tails as between the sharps- possibly because of 
more space for finger movement/ hand twisting etc.  And the point about 
constructional strength is an important one.

Maybe I should have stuck to trombone! (with a slide- that is!)
