This message got cut off the first time. Here's another try. dp

Joe:

And Liszt broke lots of strings! Serious players, concert/recital players do break strings. Some more than others. If I had a concert grand that broke 4 strings in 15 years I'd think I was retired! In the academic world, and on the concert stage where these people's reputation is made by the story in the paper the next morning, they do tend to put all they have in their performance. The fff is at least ffff, and the ppp is pppp. Less noticed is the freedom they take with the tempo but the review in the paper that says "dynamic" "sensitive" "powerful" sure beats "lifeless" "mundane" or "boring". Getting the next engagement depends on that review. In view of that, a few broken strings along the way is simply trivial collateral damage.
