upright treb dampers

Is there any advantage to using "two-part" flat treble dampers, vs the
standard one piece type? I'm thinking that maybe the two-part type act kinda
like "independant" suspension, allowing better, individual seating to the
strings. I notice that almost ALL the yamaha verts (and some other brands as
well) use this type of flat damper, which has about 1/8th" (or slightly
more) empty space between the two pieces. Maybe this is also a way to save
on felt? Think about it; with all the thousands of pianos made each year,
that's a LOT of felt!
