Short Treble (sustain?)

Yes Joe, it looks like a varnish.  And indeed, from a 9ft, I would expect more than this.  No hear of a piano with varnish on the bridge, and yet sounding very well ?  Any idea of why makers don't put varnish on the bridge ?
