Actually, according to a client of mine who has, ah, expansive overseas 
service, Ballistol is precisely what it's name says it is - a ballistics 
oil used for lubricating armament, and, yes, it does contain silicone.  To 
my much less-educated nose, it smells very much like the older formulations 
of Hoppe's Gun Oil.
