We do get hard up for stuff to fuss about. >From Virginia Tech Mulitmedia Music Dictionary Cent: A logarithmic unit used in measuring the difference between two pitches in an equal-tempered scale. One cent is one one-hundredth of an equal-tempered half step (semitone). No doubt the origins of the usage of cent in relation to pitch is an abbreviated version percent. Percent means per hundred. Talking about cents in relation to pitch is pretty meaningless to the average customer. Putting it in terms of percent of a half step is something they can understand. That is why I most often put it in such terms. My sincerest apologies for offending anyone's professional sensibilities. But I will most likely continue to use the terms interchangeably.
