Trip Charges - when to apply and why

Phil,
I have established a policy for clients some distance from me: I charge $1
per mile, after 100 miles, round trip. If there is more than one client to
be serviced, in that trip, I divide the costs between them. As I always
write this item on the bill, I have proof that each client is charged
fairly, (just in case one asks<G>). I've found this to, somewhat, compensate
me for my travel time. As I'm the only one who will work on Square Grands
and Overdamper pianos, I do get calls from many distant areas. For the major
group of my clients, in the immediate Portland area, this charge does not
apply. BTW, I log in when I leave my driveway, on a first time client. And
then, log in, (in my day timer), when I arrive at the destination. Do the
math and charge appropriately. I have never had more than slight "ouch" from
clients, in this regards. Because I tell them ahead a time, about this, it
is a non-issue. With all of the "Map" programs available, I suppose you
could even calculate and inform the client beforehand, as well.
Best Regards,
