In a mailing list emails are broadcast to email addresses where they are 
downloaded from local ISP servers (or if you have web-email you read them 
from a webserver).  In a newsgroup the messages are posted at a server 
where you go to read them.  Web-email has blurred that technical 
distinction somewhat from the user's perspective.
