Here's my two cents. On laquered hammers I frequently use aluminum foil.
Just tear off an iron length sheet and lay over the hammers. Then iron with a dry
iron. On unlaquered or at least unlaquered by me I sometimes I just lay a
damp wash cloth over the hammers for a while (1-2 minutes) remove and then cover
with aluminum foil and iron. This gives a nice crisp smooth finish and will
sometimes remove light grooves without filing. If I am trying for a brighter
sound I can press on the iron pretty hard and if I just want to clean up the
sound I lightly iron. TP
