Hi Ron,
                  Heavily doped hammers respond poorly to steam and  are 
usually back to where they were in no time flat.
It's the water proofing of the hammer felt,  that causes the 
problem.    Secret to S & S tone.

Steinway's that are obnoxiously bright  I drench in  acetone a couple of times.
