Metric measurements/was down bearing

Joe, isn't this just a matter of how fine the markings are on the ruler, and
not the metric system itself?  I mean, the lengths could be in furlongs, as
long as the ruler had fine enough markings...

(My favorite exercise in English units was to compute force in stone-fathoms
per fornight squared...)
