What is the ornate walnut veneer used on many 1920's players?

Thanks for your replies! Sadly, though, none of them
used the name I vaguely remember accompanying that
photo I saw in Fine Woodworking.
    Burls are viral infections in tree branches which
cause them to creat giant nodes. When sliced, all
sorts of weird and wild figuring is seen, so these
nodes are prized by bowl-turners, veneerers, etc..
This is not so wild, yet still full of swirls and neat
color variations. ( Sort of amoeba-like! ) 
    I'll post a picture so you can see what I mean.
The "close to the root" explanations seems the most
plausible, though.
