doweling a butt joint

Yup, go into the brace a few inches from the belly rail or rim on a 45 =
degree or so angle and go through the brace into the rail/rim. I like to =
use red oak dowels (hard/strong and very porous for epoxy) and I drill =
the hole oversize and epoxy in place. Below is a picture of a brace I =
installed. You can see two dowels in the top - one through the brace and =
into the rail and the other through the belly rail and into the brace.
