Well, yes I do "always" measure first. But not ALWAYS. The C3s I mentioned are on cruise ships, and I try to take a minimum of tools with me. I was thinking of maintaining a stock of some pre-cut wire on the ship so that the piano doesn't have to wait two weeks for a replacement after I see that a string is broke. But I guess what I'll have to do is just measure a bunch of them and make a record of what gauge goes on which note. I'll measure a number of C3 - hopefully they are all the same - Yamaha churns out a pretty consistent product - not nearly as much "personality" as some other manufacturers. It kinda amazes me that I can walk through customs onto these ships - through scanners - body searches, etc. and only once or twice has anyone ever even looked in my tool box filled with coiled wire, electronic boxes, big knives, etc., etc. Hmmmm......
