The last split lid I saw was on a 1904 Knabe. It had a
 tongue and groove joint on the core wood (
side-to-side )  but the combination of weight and
humidity cycling seemed too much for the old horse
glue. That and the fact that the movers did not hold
it vertically as they carried it!
