An interesting quote from p.252 of the Selected History (p.33 of the PDF; this was written sometime after 1975, with understandable resentment) "The great pianoforte makers now no longer voice their instruments for Chopin and Liszt. The hammers of new instruments are compressed and made hard with a felt-iron, in order to make the tone brittle and strident. A percussive effect is now required beyond all else. Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that no great pianoforte composer has emerged since Rachmaninoff. The days of romantic and impressionist music are over." --Cy Shuster-- Bluefield, WV
