In pianos with scaling problems such as Ron describes, Pure Sound wire 
has often been effectively used to improve the tone.  It has a lower 
breaking strength and therefore, the break % at the same tension is 
higher.  Also, it has a better tone at lower tensions than "regular" 
piano wire.
