When replacing funky sounding low tension wire with Pure Sound wire
should you go back with the same size?

Inharmonicity isn't the problem with that low tenor. It's tension and
low break%. The speaking lengths are just too short for plain wire at
the required pitch.=20

In pianos with scaling problems such as Ron describes, Pure Sound wire
has often been effectively used to improve the tone. It has a lower
breaking strength and therefore, the break % at the same tension is
higher. Also, it has a better tone at lower tensions than "regular"
piano wire.
