Depends what you call close.   Last July, as I came back into Maine, when 
the border guard asked me for a picture ID,I flashed my passport.  He was 
visibly pleased that I did so, and the less-than-a-minute which I spent in 
the "gate" was more pleasant small talk than anything else.
