The procedure is to clamp the area to draw it together as much as possible,
drill for the bolts, remove clamps, remove wood chips from crack. The clamps
may have to be reinstalled if the crack is wide and the holes don't 
align straight
enough to insert the bolts. Apply glue/epoxy, tighten bolts, clamp in 
between bolts.

It sounds like you didn't get a good draw with the clamps but the 
bolts should keep
it from getting any worse.

When clamping with hand screws, use the back portion because it will 
exert more force
