Wound strings are not the cause of hockey-stick bridges. Hckey-stick bridges 
are simply caused by the desire to use plain wire unisons far down the 
scale, when the case of the piano doesn't allow them to have their full 
length (when compared to the lengths given by a sort of geometric 
progression of the scale).
The wound strings in that area are just an attempt to make those unisons 
sound better than they would with plain wire.
