      Ron,
      You mentioned predrilling. The hole drilled in the bridge cap must =
be slightly larger than the shank of the screw.
      Countersink to hide the screw head.=20
      You want the screw to pass through the cap freely and thread into =
a pilot hole drilled into the bridge root that is slightly smaller than =
to  o.d. of the threads. The harder the wood ,the closer the hole size =
to screw diameter .
      I'm guessing that the threads engaged the cap and pushed it apart. =

      The only other way the cap would split with a screw would be if =
you torqued  it down too much at the end.
      I guess it worked out anyway.
