Those articles are really interesting. They also give a good explanation on why some Bechstein plates are cracked. The reason seems to be an improper fit of pinblock to plate, but not necessarily as a fault of the original installation, rather because the wood of the pinblock has compressed in time and allowed it to rotate slightly, thus stressing the plate and causing it to crack.
