Sherry,

The ringing is almost always coming from poor bass string damping.   Hold your arm over the lower bass strings and see if the ring stops.   
Solution:  Find all of Bill Spurlocks articles on dampers.   He advocates making your own and lengthening them to nearly 3 inches.
