David, The Heretic, Porritt asked: "For what jobs (and why) do you think =
hide glue is "the answer"?"

David,
Much of what you say is true. However, If you've ever had key bushing =
problem, such as...ease it: get a call back; ease it; get a call back, =
where you really check out the problem and find that the reason for the =
inconsistancy of the bushing, is: PVC-E or some such. The problem with =
PVC-E, is that it really doesn't get HARD, for a very long time. Easing =
keys using that stuff, is like herding cats, IMO. The same applies for =
hanging hammers with other glues. Voicing is like herding cats, as well. =
As the glue SLOWLYyyyyyyyy sets up, the mechanical force is constantly =
changing. This has been my experience. I do use all of the glues you =
have mentioned and many more you may not even know about. Each, IMO, has =
it's specific use, in my shop.
If I am gluing wood to wood, AND, I don't ever want it to come apart, =
then I use a really tenacious WOOD Glue. I will say, I use PVC-E for =
installing Upr. Bass Dampers, in the field. I like the fact that it is =
Flexible. Also, I use it to install Ivory & Plastic key tops. It is a =
very versatile glue that has many applications.
If you have had failures with Hide Glue, I would suspect there was =
something wrong with the glue, (There are buckets of different grades!), =
or something wrong with your application, i.e. mixture/heat/viscosity, =
etc. Yes, it is a bit of a pain to LEARN how to use it. But, once you =
get used to the proper systems involved, it becomes the glue of choice =
for ACTION PARTS, that WILL need replacement, etc., in the future. To =
sum it up, I like to think in longevity and ramifications when choosing =
a specific glue for a specific job.
