Accurate cutting strips of cloth for Damper backing

Thanks Ron. Though what came off was indeed cloth (purple), not felt. I can
see the weave in the edges. Can you suggest a proper thickness cloth in
order to act properly as a shock absorber?
I have also been asking for information regarding the change from
Split/Split to Split/Pad. The pencil mark I put on the damper head has
somehow disappeared so I'm not sure, on the Model 'A' short scale, which
numbered note has this change. Any ideas?

The dampers work better with the felt backing. It's a shock absorber 
that limits bounce and tends to keep the damper in contact with the 
string better. Plain old name board felt, glued on to the damper, 
and trimmed with scissors is quick, easy, and simple.
