No, I didn't misunderstand the sandpaper application - I merely amplified
its use to hold any width of felt/cloth by giving the material an overall
support against rucking or any kind of movement under the knife. And it
works! Now that has to be a + :-)

If I am reading you correctly, you have misunderstood where the sandpaper 
goes.
The blade does not touch it.
The sandpaper is attached to the bottom of the straight edge you are using, 
so you can still use your cutting board, to save the blade.
