Rumor has it that 121 cm uprights have equivalent length strings to a =
185
cm grand. Is this true?

Below is a photo of a 1913 M&H 52-inch (132 cm) upright back and rim =
assembly with a faux (but true-to-size) Baldwin M 5' 2" (156 cm) grand =
rim clamped so that the grand belly rail overlies the corresponding =
upright rim area. In this case you can see that the upright belly is =
maybe five centimeters longer than the grand.

If you are trying to compare piano sizes, I should think belly length =
would generally be a better indicator of piano size rather than string =
(speaking) length - that just gets you into that marketing-driven piano =
design crapola.

So I would estimate that a 121 cm (48") upright would be similar in size =
to a 148 cm (4' 10") grand.
