Jim Geiger uses a length of old fashioned curtain rod, and puts both strands of the string through the holes on either side, and slides it down to the hitch pin. I have found some plastic tubing, about 1/8 inside diameter through which I can put one strand, and accomplish the same thing. The safety pin, though seems much simpler, except maybe when it comes to undoing it down at the hitch........ les bartlett _____ From: pianotech-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of reckerj at afo.net Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2006 8:19 AM To: Pianotech List Subject: Re: String replacement under overstrung area I use a safety pin! I clip a large safety pin through the loop of the string and then around an adjacent string. Then just push it from pin to hitch, remove the pin and place it on the hitch pin. Takes away all the aggravation. I was tuning my mom’s ancient upright (1908) and of course a string broke. Even worse, it was D#4 and in the area where the strings overlap. While this was great stringing practice, I have to believe there’s a trick to getting the string where it needs to go (and stay there) without hours of heartache and assistance from my dad! I felt like I was torturing this poor old piano.
