A simple punch close to the diameter of the lead is good; too small will
spread the lead and tighten it in the hole. Support the key around the diameter of
the hole with a simple jig (a block with hole drilled in it to allow the key
lead to fall through). I have found some instances where the key lead is so
tight that I felt that I might split the key; I have drilled a hole offset from
the center of the lead and then used a small diameter punch to spread the lead
away from the wood surface of the key. The lead can then easily be pushed
out.
